D2L Brightspace ships no first-party AI writing detector. AI detection on Brightspace comes from integrated vendors that institutions license and enable per assignment.
How D2L Brightspace handles AI detection
Brightspace supports plagiarism and AI integrations through LTI 1.3. An institution licenses a vendor, typically Turnitin for Brightspace or Copyleaks, and configures it as a plagiarism review provider. Instructors enable the integration on specific assignments; student submissions flow to the vendor's backend, which returns similarity and AI scores that appear alongside the grade in Brightspace's grader view.Inside the Brightspace grading UI, the integration typically displays a similarity percentage and a separate AI percentage. Clicking through opens the vendor's native report with sentence-level highlighting. D2L's own grading workflow, rubrics, feedback, quick eval, runs independently of the detection overlay. An instructor can grade a paper without ever opening the AI report, or require the AI report to be reviewed before issuing a grade.
Accuracy in practice
Accuracy follows the vendor, not the LMS. Turnitin on Brightspace behaves the same as Turnitin on Canvas or Moodle, and Copyleaks and Unicheck follow the same pattern: the integration is a delivery channel, the detection engine belongs to the vendor.Independent research, including work from Stanford HAI, has shown that non-native English writing is flagged at higher rates across all major detectors. Brightspace-using institutions carry the same false-positive risk as Canvas or Moodle institutions running the same vendor. The choice of LMS is not the variable that matters for AI accuracy, the vendor is.
What to do about it
A flagged Brightspace submission opens a vendor report in an iframe or new tab. The AI score, flagged sentences, and any sourcing data live in that report, not in the Brightspace gradebook itself. Screenshot the native report first thing, since report access can narrow once grading closes.Pre-submission: identify the integration in your course, then run your draft through a free detector to see which sentences draw the most weight. Leap's free AI detector runs entirely in your browser with no signup, scores your text from writing signals like sentence-length variation and stock phrases, and highlights the sentences that weigh most. It is a signal, not proof, and no single score should be treated as decisive. If your text reads as stiff or formulaic, Leap's humanizer offers a cleanup pass that swaps stock AI phrases, removes em dashes and invisible characters, and marks uniform-length sentences so you can vary them yourself. It does not guarantee any detector outcome.Brightspace-specific process is the same as on other LMS platforms: document your drafting process, keep version history, and disclose AI use where your institution's policy requires it.
The responsible-use note
Defeating AI detection doesn't change the underlying integrity question. If AI help is prohibited on a specific assignment, rewriting text to pass detection is still a policy violation, just harder to catch. This page exists to help writers understand the tooling, not to encourage misconduct. Know your institution's rules, and disclose AI use where required. If AI assistance is permitted and you just want to verify your final text reads naturally, run it through Leap's free AI detector first. If the score looks high, the humanizer cleanup can help the text read more like your own writing.
