AI humanizer for academic researchers

Try Leap on your own draft. Score your text and run a cleanup pass in your browser, free, no account, nothing uploaded.

Publish with your voice intact

Leap is free and runs entirely in your browser. Paste your literature review or discussion section into the detector to see an AI score with the heaviest sentences highlighted, then run the humanizer for a cleanup pass and compare before and after. Nothing is sent anywhere.

The researcher's five pains

  • Journal AI policies evolve faster than muscle memory. Nature, Science, Cell, Lancet, and most major publishers updated AI policies in 2023 and 2024, and many are still evolving.
  • Internal AI detection in editorial pipelines. Some journals now run detectors on submissions, often without public announcement. A flag can delay or complicate a submission.
  • Disclosure fatigue. Every journal has a slightly different disclosure template, and multi-author teams often disagree on what counts as substantive AI use.
  • Voice drift in multi-author drafts. When every co-author drafts sections with AI, the manuscript ends up uniformly AI-flavored, which can raise reviewer suspicion even when disclosures are in order.
  • ESL researchers caught in false-positive loops. Detectors frequently misclassify ESL-polished English as AI-generated, compounding the language barrier.

How Leap fits a research workflow

  • Section-by-section cleanup. Score and humanize the methods, intro, and discussion separately; leave data tables, figure captions, and direct quotes untouched.
  • Free detection for self-check. Leap's detector scores text 0-100 from writing signals such as burstiness (uneven vs uniform sentence length), stock AI phrases, hedging and transition words, em-dash density, and repetition. It is a signal, not proof, and it can be wrong.
  • A cleanup pass, not a guarantee. The humanizer replaces stock AI phrases, removes em dashes and invisible characters, adds contractions, and marks sentences of uniform length so you can vary them. It does not guarantee passing any detector.
  • Nothing leaves your browser. Research drafts are often under embargo or confidentiality. Leap runs locally, so your text is never uploaded or stored.

Five realistic scenarios

The scenarios below reflect common research situations. In each case, disclosure and journal policy come first, and Leap's cleanup is only a final prose pass.

Scenario 1: ESL researcher polishing a submission

You used an AI tool for language polishing, which many journals permit with disclosure. The polished prose reads cleanly but gets a high AI score on a detector. Run the humanizer on the polished sections, review every change by hand, disclose the AI language assistance in the acknowledgments, and submit.

Scenario 2: Literature review for a systematic review paper

You drafted source summaries with AI after reading each paper yourself. Clean up the summaries, verify each synthesis against the original source by hand, and disclose AI drafting of initial summaries in the methods.

Scenario 3: Grant-proposal narrative

Your funder's policy permits AI for drafting but prohibits AI-generated research plans. Write the scientific plan by hand, use AI only for permitted sections, clean up the prose, and check funder-specific disclosure requirements before submitting.

Scenario 4: Conference paper with non-native co-authors

Team of five, three non-native English speakers, each drafting sections with AI-assisted polishing. The merged draft scores high on AI detection because every section carries similar residue. Run a cleanup pass on the merged draft, re-read it carefully as a team, submit, and disclose the shared language assistance practice in the acknowledgments.

Scenario 5: Response to reviewer comments

A reviewer wants substantial changes to the discussion. Draft revisions with AI, rewrite the substantive claims yourself, clean up the connective prose, and submit alongside a clear response-to-reviewers document. Some journals now require disclosure in the revision cover letter as well; follow the journal's specific template.

Responsibility note

Scientific integrity depends on the chain of reasoning between data, interpretation, and conclusions being genuinely yours. A cleanup pass changes prose style, it does not validate claims or verify citations. AI models routinely fabricate citations and misattribute findings, so check every reference by hand.Follow your journal's AI policy and the COPE core principles. Transparency is load-bearing. And remember that any AI score, from Leap or anyone else, is a signal that can be wrong, never the only basis for a decision about someone's work.
