How to humanize AI text and content: the complete methodology
A practical six-move method for rewriting AI-generated text so it reads as human. Apply it by hand, or use Leap's free in-browser humanizer to do a first cleanup pass.Try Leap's humanizer on your own draft
Leap's humanizer applies a cleanup pass directly in your browser: it replaces stock AI phrases, removes em dashes and invisible characters, adds contractions, and marks sentences of uniform length so you can vary them. It is free, requires no account, and your text never leaves your device. It does not guarantee passing any detector. You can also check your draft with the free AI score checker, which scores text 0-100 from writing signals and highlights the sentences that weigh most. The score is a signal, not proof, and it can be wrong.Move 1: Break parallel structure
AI loves parallel clauses: 'not only X but also Y,' 'on one hand... on the other,' 'the question is not whether but when.' Scan your AI text for anything that sounds like a rhetorical device and break it. Not every sentence needs to land a point; some should just carry information without performing.Move 2: Vary sentence length aggressively
Short sentences. Like that. Then long, winding ones with multiple clauses that accumulate momentum and land somewhere specific, three times longer than the one before. The target variance is much higher than most AI output. Aim for a rhythm where sentence length alternates by at least 3x between neighbors. This is the burstiness signal in action. For the math behind why it works, see our piece on perplexity vs burstiness.Move 3: Substitute tier-1 AI vocabulary
AI writing leans on a specific vocabulary band. Words like "delve," "intricate," and "realm" surged in scientific abstracts after 2022. Replace these words with more specific or more casual alternatives:- 'leverage' becomes 'use,' or a more specific verb ('borrow,' 'rely on')
- 'navigate' becomes 'handle,' 'work through,' or drop the metaphor entirely
- 'ensure' becomes 'make sure,' or rewrite to name the concrete action
- 'multifaceted' becomes 'complicated,' or name the specific facets
- 'paramount' becomes 'critical,' 'essential,' or state why directly
- 'facilitate' becomes 'help,' 'enable,' or rewrite with an active verb
- 'robust' becomes 'sturdy,' 'well-built,' or describe what 'robust' actually means in context
Move 4: Add specificity
AI writes in generalities. Humans anchor with specifics: a brand name, a specific date, a number from a real source, a person's name. Replace 'many companies' with 'Google, Meta, and Netflix.' Replace 'recent research' with 'a 2024 Stanford study.' Every specific detail makes the text read as researched rather than generated.Move 5: Add voice and stance
AI avoids strong positions by default. Add yours. A sentence that takes a clear stance reads as human because it carries an argument that required judgment. 'Most teams handle this badly.' 'The consensus is wrong.' 'I'd bet on the opposite.' Pointed claims are rarer in AI output than hedged ones.Move 6: Cut the preamble
Every AI-generated paragraph probably starts with something that summarizes what it's about to say. Cut those lines. Jump directly into the point. The summary sentence exists because the model is trained to be helpful; it has no place in human writing that wants to avoid feeling templated. The manual checklist
- Break every parallel structure you find.
- Aim for 3x length variance between adjacent sentences.
- Substitute tier-1 AI vocabulary with specific or casual alternatives.
- Replace 2+ generalities with specific facts or names.
- Add at least one clearly opinionated sentence.
- Delete any preamble ('In this article we'll...,' 'Let's explore...').
- Run the result through an AI detector as a signal. If it still reads as likely AI, cycle back through steps 1 to 6.
