How Leap's detector works
Leap's detector runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere, and no account is needed. It scores text from 0 to 100 based on writing signals: uneven versus uniform sentence length, stock AI phrases, hedging and transition words, em-dash density, and repetition. It highlights the sentences that weigh most on the score. The score is a signal, not proof. Any detector can be wrong, and a score should never be the only basis for accusing anyone of using AI.When Turnitin is the better pick
- You are a K-12 school, university, or testing service. Turnitin's LMS depth across Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and D2L, its FERPA-aware data handling, and its long institutional vendor relationships are built for that segment. Leap does not compete there.
- You need an instructor review workflow for flagged submissions. Turnitin's similarity plus AI report sits inside the LMS grading interface, and Turnitin's own guidance frames the AI indicator as grounds for review rather than automatic penalty.
- You need both AI detection and similarity or plagiarism detection in one tool. Similarity detection is Turnitin's original product and is deeply integrated. Leap has no plagiarism checker.
When Leap is the better pick
- You are an individual writer. Turnitin does not sell individual access, so it is simply not available to you. Leap is free and needs no account.
- You want to check your own text before submitting or publishing. Leap gives you a per-sentence view of which lines carry the strongest AI writing signals.
- You want a cleanup pass. Leap's humanize tool replaces stock AI phrases, removes em dashes and invisible characters, adds contractions, and marks sentences of uniform length so you can vary them yourself.
