Humanize AI Essays

Try Leap on your own draft. Paste your essay, see which sentences read as AI-written, and clean up the signals detectors weigh most, all in your browser.

The cleanup runs in your browser and fixes common AI writing habits. It does not guarantee that the text passes any AI detector.

Humanize your essay before submission

Paste your draft, review the sentences that score highest on AI-writing signals, run the cleanup, and check the result again. Leap runs entirely in your browser: it is free, needs no account, and your text is never sent anywhere. The cleanup replaces stock AI phrases, removes em dashes and invisible characters, adds contractions where natural, and marks sentences of uniform length so you can vary them. Your argument and citations stay yours.

Why essays specifically are hard

Academic writing sits in a weird spot for AI detectors. The register is formal by convention: long sentences, complex subordinate clauses, discipline-specific vocabulary, explicit transitional structure. Those are also patterns that correlate with AI-written text, because language models default to a formal academic register whenever the prompt nudges in that direction. That creates two problems at once. Genuinely AI-written essays are often flagged reliably, and students writing in a naturally formal style, especially non-native English writers and students in STEM fields where dense technical prose is the norm, can face elevated false-positive rates. Research from Stanford HAI in 2023 found that several major detectors frequently misclassified essays by non-native English speakers as AI-written, which is one reason a detection score should never be treated as proof. So humanizing an essay can mean two distinct jobs: cleaning up AI-assisted prose, or fixing genuinely human prose that is triggering a false positive. The cleanup pass is the same for both.

What detectors look for in academic prose

The detectors commonly used on student essays, including Turnitin, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks and ZeroGPT, all weigh signals such as perplexity (how predictable each word is) and burstiness (variance in sentence length and complexity). AI-generated text tends to score low on both, while a well-written student essay swings between short and long sentences and chooses unusual words for precision.Additional patterns matter too:
  • Vocabulary density. Stock academic phrases like multifaceted, navigate, paramount and leverage appear at high frequency in AI-written essays.
  • Transitional phrase patterns. AI prose over-uses a small set of transitions such as moreover, furthermore and it is worth noting that.
  • Paragraph symmetry. AI-generated essays tend toward paragraphs of similar length and internal structure. Human essays break that symmetry constantly.
  • Em-dash density. Heavy use of em dashes is a visible signal in machine-drafted text.

How Leap's cleanup handles academic prose

Leap's humanizer is a cleanup pass, not a rewriter that invents new content. It preserves:
  • Argumentative structure. Thesis, evidence, counter-evidence and synthesis stay exactly where you put them.
  • Citation markers. APA, MLA, Chicago and footnote styles pass through unchanged.
  • Technical vocabulary. Discipline-specific terms that carry real meaning are kept; it is the generic academic filler that gets replaced.
  • Formal voice. The cleanup does not casualize your prose. Academic essays stay in academic register.
What changes is the surface layer that detectors weigh: stock AI phrases are swapped for plainer wording, em dashes and invisible characters are removed, contractions are added where they read naturally, and runs of uniform-length sentences are flagged so you can vary the rhythm yourself.

A practical workflow for essays

  • Finish your draft, whatever mix of AI assistance and your own writing got you there.
  • Paste it into Leap's detector. Read the sentence-level highlights and note which paragraphs weigh most on the score.
  • Run the humanizer on the essay. For longer essays, work in sections so you can review the changes at each step.
  • Re-run detection on the cleaned draft and compare the highlighted sentences before and after.
  • Verify citations. Scan the in-text citations against your reference list. Leap preserves them, but it is a cheap final check.
  • Read the essay aloud. Fix any sentence that reads awkwardly. The cleanup improves the signals, but the final readability pass is still yours.
No cleanup guarantees a particular score on Turnitin or any other detector, so treat this as an editing aid, not a bypass. For Turnitin-specific questions, see the Turnitin section below.

Students, writing quality, and the long game

First, follow your institution's policy. Many schools permit AI assistance with disclosure; many prohibit it on specific assignments. Leap is a writing tool, and users are responsible for the rules that apply to them. Editing AI-assisted text to hide prohibited use is still a policy violation even if it is hard to detect.Second, cleanup is not a substitute for developing your own writing. If every essay you submit is AI-generated and polished by a tool, you are not learning to write. The students who get the most long-term value use the detect-then-clean loop as feedback on their own drafts: seeing which of your sentences read as formulaic is useful whether or not you ever use AI in the drafting.

When to clean up and when to start over

If you paste your essay into Leap's detector and the score comes back low, you probably do not need the cleanup. Your prose is already reading as human. Focus on editorial quality: argument, evidence, flow.If the score is middling, run the cleanup and re-check. Usually one pass is enough to address the flagged phrases and uniform sentences. If the score stays high after cleanup, consider whether the underlying essay is coherent as your own thinking. Heavily AI-assisted drafts sometimes need more than a surface pass: they need you to work through the argument again in your own voice, with the draft as a reference rather than a template. That is a harder workflow, but it usually produces a better essay.

What Leap does not do

Leap's detector gives a signal, not proof. Any detector can be wrong, and a score should never be the only basis for accusing a student of misconduct. The humanizer does not guarantee passing any detector and does not promise to bypass Turnitin or any other checker. It is an editing aid that fixes well-known surface signals, nothing more.
