Humanize Your Essay for Turnitin

Try Leap on your own draft. Paste it in, see which sentences read as AI, and clean up your rhythm before you turn anything in.

The cleanup runs in your browser and fixes common AI writing habits. It does not guarantee that the text passes any AI detector.

Humanize your essay before submission

Paste your draft, see sentence-level AI scores, run the cleanup pass, and check the result before you submit. Everything runs in your browser, free, with no account and nothing sent anywhere. The cleanup pass replaces stock AI phrases, removes em dashes and invisible characters, adds contractions, and marks sentences of uniform length so you can vary them by hand. It does not guarantee passing Turnitin or any other checker.

What Turnitin actually looks for

Turnitin's AI-writing detector is a classifier trained on a large corpus of paired human and AI samples, including real student writing collected through Turnitin's existing plagiarism infrastructure. It leans on two primary signals: perplexity, which measures how predictable each next word is given the previous words, and burstiness, which measures variance in sentence length and structure.Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini produce text that is unusually predictable: their job is to generate the most likely continuation, which means low perplexity by construction. They also write with tight, consistent sentence rhythms, low burstiness, because the distributions they sample from favor the statistical center of the training data. Human writers swing between short and long sentences dramatically, trail off, interrupt themselves, and choose unusual words. Detectors are trained specifically to see that difference. On top of that baseline, Turnitin has access to an enormous quantity of authentic student prose across institutions, disciplines, and native languages, which calibrates its model of what student writing actually looks like. It publishes a single AI-writing percentage (0-100%) alongside a highlighted sentence-by-sentence view, so instructors see not only a score but a map of which passages triggered the classifier.

Why AI-written essays get flagged hard

An unedited ChatGPT or Claude essay hits almost every signal detectors score on. The vocabulary skews toward stock academic words ("multifaceted," "leverage," "paramount," "navigate," "ensure"), topic sentences are engineered, transitions are uniform ("Moreover...," "Furthermore...," "In addition..."), paragraphs are all roughly the same length, and the essay has a noticeably consistent cadence from intro to conclusion.Light editing, swapping synonyms and reordering a few clauses, rarely moves the needle meaningfully, because the underlying rhythm stays the same. What does change the signals is structural: real sentence-length variance, genuine word substitutions that carry a slightly different register, deliberate asymmetry in paragraph length, and the occasional short fragment where AI writing would never stop short.

What Leap does to your essay

Leap's humanize tool is a cleanup pass, not a synonym swapper and not a Turnitin bypass. It works on the surface signals that make text read as machine-written:
  • Stock AI phrase replacement. Formulaic connectors and filler phrases get swapped for plainer, more natural wording.
  • Em dash and invisible character removal. Punctuation and hidden characters that cluster in AI output are cleaned out.
  • Contraction support. Overly formal phrasing gets the contractions a human writer would actually use.
  • Uniform sentence-length marking. Sentences with the same length and rhythm are highlighted so you can vary them yourself, because that variance is a human judgment call.
  • Your argument, facts, and citation markers stay in place. Only phrasing and rhythm change.
The cleanup pass does not guarantee passing Turnitin or any other detector. After running it, check the result with Leap's free AI score, which highlights the sentences that still weigh most, and edit those by hand.

A practical workflow for Turnitin submissions

  • Write your first draft, AI-assisted or not. Do not worry about detection yet.
  • Paste the draft into Leap's free detector. Read the sentence-level highlights: the sentences that score highest are your targets.
  • Run the cleanup pass on the draft, then vary the flagged uniform-length sentences by hand so the rhythm actually sounds like you.
  • Re-check the result with Leap's detector. No tool can promise where Turnitin's own score will land, so verify before you submit.
  • Read the final version aloud. If any sentence reads awkwardly, edit it yourself: your instructor also evaluates quality, not just a detection score.

When humanization isn't the right answer

If your school prohibits AI assistance on a specific assignment, running the output through a cleanup tool is still a policy violation, just a harder one to detect. Leap exists to help writers clean up and verify their work, not to circumvent academic integrity. Know your institution's rules. If AI help is prohibited, do not submit AI-assisted work. If it is permitted with disclosure, disclose. If you wrote your essay entirely by hand and Turnitin is flagging it as AI, which happens, especially for non-native English writers and in technical disciplines, cleanup can help, but the durable defense is documented drafts. Google Docs revision history, Word track-changes, and dated draft backups are the strongest evidence of authorship in an academic integrity review.

What to verify before you submit

  • Citations are intact. Leap preserves citation markers, but scan the references against your bibliography to confirm nothing was dropped or reformatted.
  • Technical terms are preserved. Any rephrasing can shift word choice; in a STEM paper, "eigenvalue" is not a synonym for "characteristic value" even if a detector does not care.
  • Voice is consistent. If one paragraph reads in polished academic register and the next reads casual, that register shift is itself a flag. A quick read-through catches the edge cases.
Once the cleaned-up draft reads smoothly and you have checked it again, it is ready to submit. Remember that any AI score is a signal, not proof, and detectors update constantly.
